SUMMERY

EXPERIMENT AND COSTUMBRISMO IN THE SPANISH AND THE BULGARIAN LITERATURE AT THE END OF THE XIXTH CENTURY
(THE CASES OF SALVADOR RUEDA AND ALEKO KONSTANTINOV) Text

The research is focused on exploring the present state of the theory about the literary mode (or tendencies) known as ‘costumbrismo’. In the paper there is a description of its specific forms of expression and their implied experimental character in the general frame of modernism (or ‘modernismo’, hereby they are used as synonyms).
Set in the context of the romantic and the modernist prose in Spain and Latin America, these tendencies find a wide variety of expressions without necessarily forming a separate movement. Still no final and unchallenged definition of the costumbrismo has been made but there is a general agreement about its principal characteristics. A key point in the developed topic is that they can be fruitfully compared to similar features in other works not specifically related to this mode. This from its side reveals clearer some historical processes in apparently non-related literary traditions and subsequently allows shifts in the interpretative analysis and the comparison of authors like Salvador Rueda and Aleko Konstantinov.
Another major point in the research is the longevity of the costumbrismo ideas. There is a different ‘life-span’ of the literary works because some of them seem to remain more ‘vital’ and ‘intriguing’ even a century after being published. The comparison concentrates on some rhetorical means and stances; the way the personages are build and their flexibility, including their changing point of view. And it only touches subjects like: the ironic and the empathic approaches of the narrator; the construction and the deconstruction of national myths; the free association and dialogism of the literary work; the role of literature to fill cultural gaps and to offer new models for overcoming socio-cultural pressures and ideological restrictions.
